Description:

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce participants to the basic tenets of therapeutic models of assessment (TA) and to describe how TA can be used to enhance ongoing psychotherapy.  In recent years, there has been a shift toward using comprehensive personality assessment as a therapeutic intervention to bring about increased self-understanding and behavior change in patients.  This presentation will describe the result of a three-year study conducted at UCSB where patients in ongoing psychotherapy were offered TA in a consultation model and feedback was provided to patients and therapists in a joint feedback session.  A case study will be used to highlight the technique and the therapist’s perspective will be discussed.

Goals and Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  • 1.       Describe the difference between therapeutic assessment and information-gathering assessment.
  • 2.       Describe the current state of the research on the effectiveness of therapeutic assessment.

  • 4.       Discuss when a referral for therapeutic assessment might be made.
